Fringe Binge 2017 Show #14 - Briony Redman - Theory Of Positivity; Pleasance Courtyard, 1300, 07-Aug-17

I had seen Ms. Redman last year (here) and was very impressed by her performance, so this was one of the early tickets I bought.

Many of the shows I've seen this year have had an air of exasperation about them - trying to be satirical and funny about politics these days is a no-win game as real-life seems so scary and random. Fortunately this is not Ms. Redman's style in this show as she goes for a humourously absurdist and story-based approach. As such this was a very pleasant and amusing first-show of the day which, while not delving into many contemporary or moral/political issues was extremely funny and all the better for it.

The show is loosely structured around Ms. Redman's attempts to write a screenplay. She's picked three stories - a rom-com, an action film and a monster movie - and the show flips between the three stories with Ms. R playing multiple characters before bringing them all together. The show is book-ended with a Twin Peaks Log Lady style introduction and conclusion (with a very amusing sight gag) so any show which shoe-horns in TP references is good with me.

Ms. R is an excellent and charismatic performer. The show is very funny and starting at 1300 is a nigh perfect and gentle way to start a long day at the Fringe. Thoroughly recommended.
