Fringe Binge 2017 Show #22 - Fern Brady - Suffer Fools!; The Stand Comedy Club, 1205, 09-Aug-17

I'd vaguely heard of young Ms. Brady but can't remember having seen or heard much of her work (she's had articles published and been on television as well as touring for several years). However I'd read good things and given the time of the show it was easy to slot this one in to the schedule.

I'm glad I did. She started with a droll anecdote about how she had been so nervous about this run she had tried to get out of it just before the start of the Fringe - she had said to the Fringe management she would pay whatever it took to get her out of her commitment; the response of seventy-five thousand pounds was not exactly received well. "So here I am!"

Plenty of amusing anecdotes but also some troubling details about her life. She herself said she was borderline Aspergers, borderline autistic and has had some colourful incidents, mostly surrounding men she's been mixed up with, a theme many female comics tend to circle back towards. However most female comics haven't had an ex try and kill them by smothering them with a pillow. Similarly most female comics haven't gone a little psychotic when an ex and his new girlfriend were attending a posh function, nor worked for several years in a hostel for recently-released serious offenders (murderers, rapists, paedophiles) which she says were really happy times. The routine ended with a mock funeral service where she imagined what her funeral might be - she had even prepared an Order Of Service which she handed out and demanded we sing along to a hymn.

Cheery then.

It was good fun, and while Ms. Brady seemed to be like a cross between Sadness from Inside Out and Morticia Addams there were plenty of good laughs. She may be slightly unhinged, perhaps more so than many other comics, but that's part of her charm. Very enjoyable.
