Fringe Binge 2017 Show #7 - Jan Ravens - Difficult Woman; Gilded Balloon, 1900, 05-Aug-17
Ms. Ravens is probably best known as an impressionist, regularly cropping up on BBC Radio currently, who made her name as so many did on Spitting Image and went on to bigger and better things. Though to me she will always be the voice of the Cadbury's Caramel bunny ... What is probably less well known is she a fine physical comedian to match the impressive voice contortions and gurning.
The Dangeous Woman title is from a Ken Clarke quote who said of current PM (as at time of typing) Theresa May, "She's a bloody difficult woman ..." The show takes this as its starting point and goes on to ask, given the current state of politics and the general state of society and the planet, "What's wrong with being difficult? We need MORE difficult women ..." A sentiment few could really argue with. Plenty of other themes and digressions too as you would expect - ruminations on aging and especially being sandwiched between children growing up and making their way and at least one aging and degenerating parent. But you're never that far from an impression and they were all pretty spot on - as you would imaging Theresa May and Angela Merkel feature heavily.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable show with many laugh-out loud and close-to-the-knuckle lines. I had gone in expecting it to be good, but it turned out to be one of the highlights of Fringe Binge 2017 thus far.
There was also an extraordinarily moving tribute to Victoria Wood, sung and voiced in her style, which certainly had this cynical heartless bastard wondering why it had suddenly become so dusty ...
