Fringe Binge 2017 Show #27 - Ellie Taylor - This Guy; Pleasance Courtyard, 1745, 10-Aug-17
FULL DISCLOSURE - I have a crush on Ms. Taylor (Really? You Mikey? Crushing on a female comic?) which is as futile as everything else I do but I was quite excited to see Ms. Taylor (sadly she's happily married - to an Australian CNN international correspondent no less - so not much chance for me then). She'd been bubbling up on my radar for a number of years after performances on Live At The Apollo as well as 8 Out Of 10 Cats and Mock The Week (I think she turned up on Russell Howard too but could be wrong) as well as various other programmes. Most recently, and currently, she's plays a news anchor and is contributor to The Mash Report on BBC2.
She is very very good. Her routine was quite simple - after a little audience interaction she launched into her set which was, broadly speaking, about how she does NOT want children and how she wishes people would stop asking her if and when she's going to have one (coincidentally much the same theme popped up in the very next show - Angela Barnes). As so many of her own friends are having children the decreasingly fewer hold-outs did the modern thing and formed a Whatsapp group called The Barren Karens, the sanctity of which was broken recently when one of the dwindling number became pregnant.
Lots of good stories. Amusing anecdotes of teen pregnancy monthly panics, frustration at her husband heading off to the world's hotspots at a moment's notice and returning unscathed with no incidents to extract comedy material out of ... lots of family stuff ...
She is an extraordinarily engaging comic with a unique style and presentation. It's a good show, she's a great talent and you should go and see her.
